A fantastic opportunity has arisen for a hands-on Head Gardener at Barkby Hall in Leicestershire. The position is offered on a full-time basis to head a team who care for an 8 acre private garden. The main garden has herbaceous borders both formal and informal, a scented garden, white garden, shrubs roses, ornamental trees, water features and a large pond [maintained on contract]. Also, there is a woodland garden of rhododendrons and spring bulbs with wildflowers. There is a one and half acre walled kitchen garden, a walled cut flower garden with an extensive range of greenhouses, which house a collection of Camellias and Sarracenias.
The ideal candidate will be creative, and have good plant knowledge, communication skills and practical abilities as well as having a true passion for plants and gardening.
Responsibilities
He or she will need to be hard-working, honest, and reliable. They will also need the ability to run a budget and supervise other labour and trainees if necessary. Appropriate training certificates would be beneficial but not essential, as training can be given. The successful candidate will be able to: –
- Lead, manage and motivate a small team of garden staff.
- Develop, enhance the gardens and grounds with the ability to design planting areas.
- Maintain herbaceous borders, shrubberies, greenhouses and all areas of the gardens in liaison with the Family and their Agent.
- Ability to manage external contractors.
- Ensure the gardens and grounds are kept tidy.
- Ability to operate and maintain all typical garden machinery.
